Our 2019-2020 Recipient
Each year Charity League thoughtfully selects a local charity to be the recipient of our annual fundraising campaign. Charity League is delighted to announce Timon’s Ministries as the recipient of our 2019-2020 fundraising efforts!
Timon’s Ministries is a day resource service catering to the Coastal Bend’s needy and homeless community. Organized and incorporated by a group of churches, Timon’s Ministries opened its doors in 2000. Timon’s Ministries serves primarily the working poor. Timon’s Ministries serves primarily the working poor- those who, although employed, still need help meeting their basic needs.
Timon’s Ministries is located in an old convenience store built in 1971. They are now finding the structure does not meet current electrical code. Charity League is raising funds to replace worn-out air-conditioning equipment, bring electrical systems up to code, and add to the existing restroom and laundry facilities. These necessary renovations will increase the ability of outreach for such an underserved community.
WHAT THEY DO
If individuals can prove they are drug-free, they may have access to receiving medical, vision, and dental services. Medical services are provided by a physician and on-site nurse for the uninsured. Monthly eye care appointments are available and lenses are provided free of charge. The William Allen Dental Clinic opened in 2009, and volunteer dentists have already treated over 3,400 patients.
Financial assistance to obtain ID’s, birth certificates, and licensing is also available for those that are drug-free so that they can obtain other assistance.
Other services open to anyone who is in need include serving 80-100 hot meals daily Monday through Friday, laundry and shower facilities, a "shop" stocked with clothing and essential household items, grocery delivery to the elderly and home-bound, yearly school supply distribution, diabetic screening and tracking, and a barbershop- because when you look good, you feel good!
A crisis pantry that distributes two to three tons of groceries to the local community is also on the property for residents of the 78418 zip code.
“A hand up, not a handout” is Timon’s belief.
