Our 2023-2024 Recipient
Corpus Christi Literacy Council
Each year Charity League thoughtfully selects a local charity to be the recipient of our annual fundraising campaign. Charity League is delighted to announce Corpus Christi Literacy Council as the recipient of our 2023-2024 fundraising efforts!
What CCLC Does
For the past 37 years, the Corpus Christi Literacy Council has provided literacy information, tutoring, training, literacy instruction and conversational English to any adult, seventeen and older, seeking assistance. Their impact reaches more than 300 individuals annually who progress from the CCLC program to regular employment or further schooling such as GED classes and job training courses. Low literacy was never more evident than during the pandemic. More than half (54%) of American adults read below a sixth-grade level. About 43 million Americans-nearly one in five adults-read below a third-grade level. Low literacy reduces income, health, and the quality of life for individuals and imposes massive costs on society. Low literacy affects not only adults but entire families and persists across generations. The US economy would generate an additional 2.2 trillion per year if adults could read at or above a sixth-grade level. Prior to 2020, all CCLC classes were offered only face-to-face. Today, classes are offered in a hybrid model, utilizing both in-person and on-line classes. Therefore, the need for technological advancement is greater now than ever.
Funds Used
The plan for Charity League’s fundraising efforts is to bring the CCLC’s classrooms and offices up to 21st century technology standards, expand existing services, introduce new teaching methods, and create Active Learning Centers.
